/ Spectacular Volcano explosion in Chile
« on: April 23, 2015, 09:11:25 AM »
Volcano Calbuco in Chile erupted for the first time in over 5 decades yesterday, sending ash and smoke several miles into the sky.

The sudden eruption occurred around 2100 GMT, about 625 miles south of the capital Santiago near the tourist town of Puerto Varas.

About 1,500 people were being moved out of the area and an evacuation radius of 20 kilometers has been established, authorities said.

Trevor Moffat, who lives in Ensenada, about 6 miles from the volcano, said the eruption happened without warning.  Volcano Calbuco's last major eruption happened in 1961. "It sounded like a big tractor trailer passing by the road, rattling and shaking, guttural rumbling ... we left everything there, grabbed my kid, my dog, got in the car with my wife," said Moffat.

"All the neighbors were outside, a lot of young people crying. Armageddon type reaction," said Canada-born Moffat.

Pictures showed a spectacular mushroom-shaped column billowing into the sky with occasional lighting bolts shooting through. The eruption was seen in other towns at least 30 miles away.

"There are a lot of people out in the streets, many heading to the gas stations to fill up on gas," Derek Way, a resident of Puerto Varas, said. "A friend told me to fill everything we have with water," said Way.

Chile, on the Pacific 'Rim of Fire', has the second largest chain of volcanoes in the world after Indonesia, including around 500 that are potentially active.

In March, volcano Villarrica, also in southern Chile, erupted in spectacular fashion, sending a plume of ash and lava high into the sky, but quickly subsided.

/ Lyrid meteor shower this week
« on: April 20, 2015, 07:38:51 PM »
The Lyrid meteor shower happens from April 16 to 25. But when the most meteors are streaking across the sky, will be a few hours before dawn on Wednesday, April 22 and Thursday, April 23.

If the sky is clear, & you're in a dark location far from city lights, you may see up to 10 to 20 meteors each hour.

These types of meteor showers come from the small bits of comet tails. When Earth passes through a comet's tail, its gravitational pull attracts their debris, which then enters the atmosphere. The comet that produces the Lyrids is called Comet C/1861 G1, which orbits the sun every 415 years.

The constellation that the Lyrid meteors seem to come from is Lyra.

So, when you're watching the shower, you can trace the path of the meteors back to the Lyra constellation. You can easily find this constellation in the sky because it contains one of the brightest stars, Vega.

- You will shed those extra pounds. Oatmeal could help you eat less later during the day and control weight says the research published in the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism because you won't get as hungry as fast later.

- Oats are loaded in dietary fiber. Fiber is responsible for lowering your cholesterol levels, stabilizing your blood sugar as well as keeping you feeling full longer. A serving of oatmeal each morning also helps promote regular bowel movements and prevents constipation.

- Oatmeal is a power packed food consisting mainly of complex carbohydrates. It also provides around 5 grams of protein.

- The high fiber and complex carbohydrates slow down the conversion of this whole food to simple sugars. The high levels of magnesium nourish the body's proper use of glucose and insulin secretion.

- Oatmeal keeps you full for longer. According to the "Journal of Clinical Nutrition", "when compared to breakfast foods such as donuts, croissants, eggs, high-bran cereals and whole-grain bread, oatmeal had the highest satiety index, twice as high as white bread and 25 percent higher than eggs and high-brain cereals.

- Oatmeal, like many whole grains, contains plant lignans, which are converted by intestinal flora into mammalian lignans. One lignan, called enterolactone, is thought to protect against breast and other hormone-dependent cancers as well as heart disease.

- A Harvard study on 21,000 participants over 19 years showed that found that men who enjoyed a daily morning bowl of whole grain cereal had a 29 percent lower risk of heart failure.

- Oatmeal contains a special type of antioxidant called avenanthramide, that is known to fight off free radicals that attack high-density lipoproteins, or HDL, which is known as the good cholesterol. They also protect LDL cholesterol from oxidizing from copper, which reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

- It tastes good! Whether with milk or with fruits (some even put an egg in it), oatmeal is just too delicious.

4 tablespoons mini dark chocolate chips
3 tablespoons of water

Preheat oven to 350F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside *.
Whisk together oats, cinnamon, ginger, and baking soda. Combine water, peanut butter, sugar, and vanilla extract. Pour into oat mixture and stir until combined. Fold in chocolate chips until distributed. Bake 8-10 minutes. Cool on pan for 2 minutes before moving to cooling rack to cool completely.

*In a pinch you can use a lightly oiled or buttered cookie sheet instead. It won't turn out as good but it will work.

/ Apple watches-I don't get it
« on: April 08, 2015, 10:30:15 AM »
I don't wear a watch while carrying a phone, because the phone also tells time!

These Apple watches, just like most of the android watches that been around for years, need to be linked to your phone via bluetooth to fully function properly.

2 women, ages 21 and 25, left their tour group and used a coin to carve a "J" and an "N", into the Colosseum. They were caught by security after they documented their crime by taking a selfie. The initials were about 3" high, on a wall that was restored during the 1800s. Defacing the Colosseum is forbidden — if common sense doesn't stop a person, signs everywhere in English and Italian are posted.

3 months ago a Russian tourist who was caught carving a 10-inch letter received a four month suspended prison sentence and a fine of $22,000. The Californians are set to face a judge soon.

/ Florida bans 'global warming,' 'climate change'
« on: March 09, 2015, 12:20:50 AM »
Several employees, consultants, and volunteers with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection said that they were directed to not use the terms "climate change," "global warming," and "sustainability" in official communications after Gov. Rick Scott (R) took office in 2011.

Part of the state agency's responsibility is to study climate change. Christopher Byrd, a former attorney with the DEP's Office of General Counsel, said that his superiors shared this new unwritten policy to him after Scott appointed Herschel Vinyard Jr. as the DEP's director. "It's an indication that the political leadership in the state of Florida is not willing to address these issues and face the music when it comes to the challenges that climate change presents," he said.

Another DEP employee, Kristina Trotta, said that during a 2014 staff meeting, her supervisor said to refrain from using the terms "climate change" and "global warming." “We were told that we were not allowed to discuss anything that was not a true fact,” she said. Scott is a vocal skeptic of global warming, saying he is "not convinced” and would need "something more convincing than what I've read."
